On Thursday, April 24, 2025, our partner MedINA successfully organized the event “Revitalizing Traditional Knowledge: Dry-Stone Check Dams and Sustainable Water Management in Sifnos” at the Sifnos Cultural Center “Marianthi Símou” under the auspices of the Municipality of Sifnos.
The event, which formed part of CARDIMED project, was well-attended, bringing together over 40 participants, including the Mayor of Sifnos, Ms. Maria Nadali, local authorities, residents, and experts. In a warm and constructive atmosphere, MedINA presented its initiative to reintroduce the traditional practice of dry-stone check dams as a Nature-Based Solution (NBS) to address the pressing water management challenges posed by climate change.
During the event, the team outlined the upcoming construction of 120 dry-stone check dams across two selected streams on the island, highlighting the multiple anticipated benefits — including aquifer recharge, flood risk mitigation, improved irrigation capacity, and enhanced habitat conditions for local biodiversity.
The detailed site planning study was presented, showcasing the finalized locations of the check dams. Emphasis was placed on the project’s optimal design approach, achieved through comprehensive field surveys and the use of drone technology to optimize the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Best practices were also shared by “Boulouki | Itinerant Workshop on Traditional Building Techniques”, bringing valuable experience in traditional construction methods. The event concluded with a lively discussion, giving participants the opportunity to share their perspectives and explore how the project contributes to the island’s resilience and long-term sustainability.
