Smart Water Management in Greece
Industrial symbiosis through smart water management in Central Greece
Introduction of Nature-Based Solutions at industrial DEMO scale to improve water circularity, supported by advanced treatment systems and digital tools enabling smart and demand-driven water management.
Context
CARDIMED DEMO2 is implemented in Oinofyta, Central Greece, within an industrial setting, and focuses on smart water management through industrial symbiosis. The DEMO integrates the recovery, treatment, and reuse of rainwater, peri-urban runoff, and industrial wastewater to meet different operational needs such as cooling, and other industrial processes.
The system combines Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) with engineered infrastructure and digital technologies, creating a complex interface that is dynamically optimised. Three complementary NbS units are deployed, each dedicated to a specific water stream: a hybrid xeriscape bioswale for stormwater and peri-urban runoff, a biofiltration unit for harvested rainwater, and a subsurface flow constructed wetland for industrial wastewater treatment.
These solutions are embedded within a smart water management framework, paving the way for industrial symbiosis and more efficient resource use, while reducing water and energy footprints and enhancing climate resilience in urban–industrial environments.
Output
Operational demonstration of smart industrial water management through NbS-based treatment and reuse of non-conventional water sources, enabling increased water circularity and providing a replicable model for industrial symbiosis at regional level.
