A Product of the Vertical Ecosystem Project
The vertical garden is a key outcome of the Vertical Ecosystem project, an international cooperation initiative aimed at advancing innovation and sustainability in the construction sector. This project was funded by the European Commission under the Metabuilding project, which seeks to encourage groundbreaking solutions for the building industry by promoting collaboration across countries, organisations and disciplines.
The Vertical Ecosystem project focused on the development and implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS), showcasing their potential to address pressing environmental challenges while enhancing urban biodiversity. Through this initiative, BIOAZUL and its partners introduced innovative systems that merge reclaimed water technologies with vertical gardening, creating a sustainable model that redefines green building practices.

At the Mariposa Hotel, greywater from two rooms is treated through a sophisticated recycling system and used to irrigate the hydroponic garden.
