The Municipality of Nicosia has been awarded the prestigious title Green City of Cyprus 2024 in the category of Water Resource Management at the Pan-Cyprian Environmental Awards. This recognition was given for the pioneering action “Rainwater Collection and Improvement of Groundwater Quality through the Use of Green Microalgae,” which is being implemented within the framework CARDIMED.
This initiative marks the first application of such an approach in Cyprus. By integrating green microalgae into water management, Nicosia is able to improve groundwater quality while simultaneously promoting the collection and reuse of rainwater. The action demonstrates how nature-based solutions can effectively address urban environmental challenges, reduce pollution, and contribute to long-term sustainability.
For CARDIMED, this award represents a tangible example of how collaborative research and innovation can support Mediterranean cities in strengthening their resilience to climate change. By combining scientific expertise with local action, the project enables municipalities like Nicosia to test and scale up solutions that improve environmental quality and safeguard natural resources.
