Empowering Citizens to Drive Action Against Europe’s Water Crisis
A new European Citizens’ Initiative, ECI4Water, has been launched to tackle Europe’s mounting water challenges and foster a water-smart, resilient future. This initiative, developed in response to the growing water crisis, seeks to secure sustainable water resources, protect natural ecosystems, and reform policies to ensure water security for all Europeans.
Europe is increasingly grappling with the severe impacts of the global water crisis, including frequent droughts, floods, and compromised water quality. These challenges threaten Europe’s environmental sustainability, economic stability, and social equity. In recent years, significant progress has been made, such as with the EU Blue Deal and the WaterWiseEU campaign, which encourages citizens to “See Water Differently.” However, ECI4Water emphasizes that true change requires robust political action and policy innovation.
ECI4Water’s Key Aims
ECI4Water calls on the EU and its citizens to unite around three main goals:
- Recognize Water’s Full Value: Water is essential beyond its environmental role, underpinning industrial goals like European hydrogen production and meeting basic human needs. With nearly 38% of Europeans impacted by water scarcity, it is crucial to recognize and prioritize water’s multiple values.
- Secure Access to Safe Drinking Water for All: As 10 million Europeans still lack safe drinking water, ECI4Water advocates for policies ensuring all citizens can access sufficient, safe, and equitable water resources.
- Build a Water-Smart Society: Despite advancements in EU water legislation, significant gaps remain due to funding shortages and policy integration issues. ECI4Water calls for a cohesive approach that embeds water considerations into all relevant policy areas.
Objectives for a Water-Smart Europe
The ECI4Water initiative highlights seven core objectives:
- Strategic Water Action in Europe: Develop and implement a coordinated water policy approach across EU sectors, in line with the EU Blue Deal.
- Elevate Water as a Policy Priority: ECI4Water urges the European Commission to prioritize water resilience on par with climate action and decarbonization.
