CARDIMED aims to help Nature-based Solutions take root across the Mediterranean, looking beyond its initial 9 Demo sites to scale up resilience in regions and communities facing climate hazards. This sharing of solutions is underway, starting with Replicators interested in implementing resilience measures in their communities, and reaching even further with the formation of the CARDIMED Resilience Alliance.
To get more communities involved, CARDIMED partners ICLEI, SEMIDE and NTUA held a workshop to take stock of interested regions’ most pressing climate hazards and opportunities to implement nature-based resilience measures. To start, Replicators built on two self-assessment exercises: one to assess their regional governance context and another to map key stakeholders in their region, from sectors like public administration, civil society, the private sector, and community associations.
The Replicators got an inside look into many of CARDIMED’s Nature-based Solutions in action, giving them the chance to discuss what might be possible to reproduce in their communities. This marked the start of a process of identifying barriers and matching replicators with solutions undertaken as part of CARDIMED. Soon, Replicator regions will be partnered up with DEMOs for exchange and learning opportunities and provided with a Replication Package that will provide supporting tools and materials to help solutions take root.

The new CARDIMED Resilience Alliance reaches even further and is poised to become a touchpoint for a collaborative approach to climate adaptation. Conceptualized as a framework for regions to exchange and interact with one another, the alliance fosters the sharing of solutions and lessons learned in applying Nature-based Solutions, including for CARDIMED Replicators. By developing actionable strategies and strengthening engagement between communities, the Resilience Alliance builds the capacity of those involved – an especially important element, in light of its aim to reach 28 regions and 70 communities by 2030.
To lay the groundwork for these regions to implement their solutions, the Resilience Alliance also focuses on changing policy. Partners will take a Community of Practice approach, and work to support uptake through policy briefs produced collaboratively with other projects involved in the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change.
CARDIMED’s goals are ambitious, in terms of number of communities impacted – but with a robust and engaged group of Replicators, and a Resilience Alliance dedicated to the sharing of solutions, it is not out of reach. By making sure that results are shared, CARDIMED brings meaningful collaboration to the growing nexus of Nature-based Solutions and climate resilience.
