CARDIMED connecting with NbS initiatives and projects across Europe

Our partner SEMIDE, The Euro-Mediterranean Information System on know-how in the Water sector, is an organisation dedicated to facilitating exchanges of information on the water sector within the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership countries. As an institutional network comprising ministries responsible for water management, SEMIDE serves as a valuable platform for water authorities to exploit products and services on both shores of the Mediterranean sea.

Our netoworking vision

One of SEMIDE’s main actions in CARDIMED is to develop cooperation with external actors who work on similar and cross-linked areas to the project. The aim is to maximise the impact, make synergies, share experiences and promote results through the organisation of joint events, making cross communication activities and publishing common policy briefs. The networking strategy started by setting-up a database gathering over 50 projects and initiatives suitable for networking activities. In this dataset, all CARDIMED partners have access to a detailed presentation of each project, including its type, timeline, the contact plan and its status.

NbS-related projects and initiatives mapped by SEMIDE

Following this action, SEMIDE has initiated contacts with a selection of the identified projects. Accordingly, CARDIMED was introduced at a first series of online events (namely the Green Deal Projects Support Office  4th Network of Multipliers Webinar in January 2024, NetworkNature+ meeting of Task Forces, and the 2nd Synergy Workshops gathering the projects of the EU Mission Adaptation to Climate Change in April 2024) to map existing working groups fitting for collaboration with CARDIMED.

A glimpse of our networking activities: Joining forces with our sister projects under “NBS4EU” and beyond

Overall, the project records an increasing number of opportunities for collaboration thanks to the joint effort made by the consortium. Out of 100 communication and dissemination activities conducted between October 2024 and February 2025, 48% are judged suitable to establish formal collaboration with EU projects and initiatives (Interreg GIFLUID Italia-Malta, Mission CLIMA projects) as well as key practitioners and stakeholders (e.g., Metropole Nice Cote d’Azur, local NGOs, …).

In addition, CARDIMED was involved in the set-up of NBS4EU network (launched in 2024) to explore how NbS can serve as a cornerstone for transformative climate adaptation. The cluster is composed of seven Horizon EU-funded projects from Mission CLIMA, including ARCADIA, DesirMED, MountResilience, LAND4CLIMATE, NBRACER, NATALIE and NBRACER. To ensure a tighter collaboration, the network is composed of three task forces:

  • Task Force “Policy” that is coordinated by SEMIDE.
  • Task Force “NbS performance & effectiveness evaluation”, coordinated by CMCC Foundation.
  • Task Force “Communication and dissemination” coordinated by the Sustainable Innovation Institute.

Communication and dissemination activities conducted by CARDIMED partners

At a broader scope, several CARDIMED partners, including SEMIDE, have joined the Mission Implementation Platform (MIP4Adapt) and are actively involved in different Thematic Working Groups (TWG). In the frame of the TWG “Financing Climate Action”, SEMIDE took part in the 2nd Mission Projects Seminar to represent CARDIMED and the TWG while engaging with new Mission projects. Additionally, SEMIDE has represented CARDIMED in the MIP4Adapt webinar “Best practices to financing climate resilience: guidance and roundtable on combining public and private funds” in November 2024 and co-hosted the roundtable “How to foster private and public collaboration to financing climate resilience?” jointly with P2R and CLIMATEFIT projects. In the frame of 7th European Climate Change Adaptation Conference, a common proposal for session under the theme “Scaling Innovative Adaptation Finance Solutions: Transference of Financial Structures and Instruments Across European Boarders” was submitted jointly with MIP4ADAPT, CLIMATEFIT, SOTERIA, REGILIENCE and NATALIE.

Bilateral networking with other projects like RESIST and Naturance is also maintained to explore specific pathways for collaboration while focusing on key adaptation themes. For instance, CARDIMED is invited to sign the Memorandum of Understanding of the RESIST project that aims at engaging European Horizon projects in the field of adaptation to climate Change. In addition, SEMIDE and CARDIMED hosted a world café under the theme “Financing mechanisms for NbS in the EU and their impacts on social equity” during the Finance Innovation Festival on Insurance and Investment Opportunities for NbS held by the EU project Naturance in May 2024.

Additionally, SEMIDE has represented CARDIMED in the Cluster Meeting of Network Nature + (NN+) that was held in Brussels in September 2024, allowing direct exchange with European projects in the field of Nature-based Economy as well as policymakers, researchers, and actors from the private sector. CARDIMED participated at the Networking Round Table “Understanding challenges and activities of Nature-based Enterprises” along with other TF members to discuss the ideas submitted in the frame of NN+ Labs during their Open Call 1 and further elaborate them in sub-groups. As a member of the  NBS Taskforce 3 “Financing and Business Models for NBS in a Nature-Positive Economy”, CARDIMED was invited to contribute to the upcoming EC expert publication on NbS in the Nature based Economy.
