On 18 May 2026, researchers from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), coordinator of the CARDIMED project, visited the 1st Primary School of Karystos to deliver an educational workshop aimed at raising awareness among young students about climate change and the role of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in addressing environmental challenges.
The session began with an interactive introduction to climate change, where researchers explained its causes, impacts and possible mitigation measures using age-appropriate language. Students actively participated throughout the discussion, asking questions and sharing their own ideas and experiences related to the environment.
To make the learning experience more engaging, the workshop continued with an educational card-matching game developed around the CARDIMED Nature-based Solutions. Working in small groups, students matched different NbS cards with ten major environmental challenges that these solutions help address. Rather than relying on technical information, the activity was designed using symbols, colours and illustrations, allowing children to identify the correct connections through observation and collaboration.
Once the matching exercise was completed, students checked their answers using the information provided on the back of the cards and explained the reasoning behind their choices. This encouraged discussion, teamwork and critical thinking while reinforcing their understanding of how different Nature-based Solutions respond to specific climate and environmental challenges.
In the final part of the workshop, NTUA researchers used a map of the Mediterranean region to show where different Nature-based Solutions are being implemented across the countries participating in CARDIMED. The activity highlighted that climate change is a shared challenge across the Mediterranean and demonstrated how the project’s DEMO sites are testing innovative solutions adapted to different regional contexts.
