CARDIMED project made a remarkable impact at the 16th International Conference on Urban Drainage (ICUD2024), which took place from June 9 to 14 in Delft, Netherlands.
Our partners from IRIDRA and the University of Catania had the incredible opportunity to present our latest findings to a global audience of experts in urban drainage. This conference is renowned for addressing cutting-edge advancements in urban water management, and it provided us with an excellent platform to showcase our contributions to stormwater pollution control and flood mitigation.

- “Merging SuDS and Treatment Wetland Knowledge for Improving Bioretention System Design for Stormwater Pollution Control” – Presented by Rizzo A., Tondera K., and Blecken G. This poster highlighted how integrating Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) with treatment wetlands can significantly enhance bioretention system design and effectiveness.
- “Retrofitting Interventions with Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions for Hydraulic Risk Mitigation: The Case Study of Catania (Sicily, Italy)” – Presented by Sciuto L., Rizzo A., Licciardello F., Masi F., Barbagallo S., and Cirelli G. L. We shared practical insights into how retrofitting urban areas in Catania with SuDS can mitigate hydraulic risks.
- “The Role of Green Roofs in Stormwater Runoff Quantity-Quality Management and in Thermal Performance: The Case Study of Catania (Sicily, Italy)” – Presented by Sciuto L., Cascone S., Licciardello F., Rizzo A., Scavera V., Longo Minnolo G., Barresi S., Vanella D., Consoli S., and Cirelli G. L. This poster explored how green roofs contribute to managing stormwater runoff and improving thermal performance.

- We shared preliminary results on the performance of SubDemos that we have installed in Catania, providing a glimpse into their real-world effectiveness.
- We offered a general overview of the roles of SubDemo and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in stormwater pollution control.
- We presented the concept design for DEMO 4 of CARDIMED, which involves retrofitting the Tondo Gioeni roundabout in Catania with SuDS to address pluvial flooding.
