CARDIMED Showcased at ECOMONDO 2024: Advancing Nature-Based Solutions for Water Management

On November 5th, 2024 the CARDIMED project took center stage at ECOMONDO 2024, Europe’s leading event for ecological transition and circular economy innovations. During a dedicated session at Agora Tiberio – Water Cycle, Prof. Francesco Fatone moderated an engaging discussion featuring Lorenzo Tombolini, a PhD candidate from Università Politecnica delle Marche, who presented the project’s latest advancements.

Lorenzo highlighted CARDIMED DEMO 3, an innovative system leveraging Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) to integrate multiple sustainable water management techniques. The system focuses on three key areas:

  • Advanced water treatment, incorporating tertiary and quaternary processes
  • Sustainable irrigation, enhancing agricultural productivity
  • Natural solutions for agricultural runoff, utilizing wetlands and riparian buffers to protect water quality

A standout feature of DEMO 3 is its innovative approach to water quality assessment. By correlating water quality parameters with the physiological state of fish in aquaculture tanks, the system provides a holistic evaluation of its effectiveness in supporting both environmental sustainability and food production.

The presentation sparked strong interest and dynamic discussions, with attendees eager to explore the project’s potential impact on water conservation and sustainable agriculture.
