On March 2025 CARDIMED proudly contributed to the international MULTISOURCE workshop on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for urban water management, hosted by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Florianópolis, Brazil. The three-day event brought together Brazilian and European researchers, public authorities, companies, and community stakeholders to explore sustainable, decentralized approaches to water challenges in urban environments.
The workshop focused on showcasing the multifunctionality of NbS, building local capacity through stakeholder mapping and business model development, and promoting the use of decision-support tools. Participants examined real-world case studies on constructed wetlands, green infrastructure, and sustainable drainage systems, with the goal of strengthening local adaptation strategies and climate resilience.
Representing CARDIMED, Anacleto Rizzo from IRIDRA presented valuable insights from the Mediterranean region, highlighting practical applications of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and sponge city strategies. These examples illustrated how European experience can inform and inspire NbS implementation in Brazilian cities. Elena Petsani from ICLEI also represented CARDIMED at the workshop, reinforcing the importance of knowledge exchange and international collaboration.
The event concluded with a shared vision to establish a national NbS hub in Brazil, creating lasting partnerships and fostering cross-continental learning. CARDIMED is proud to support these global efforts to scale up Nature-based Solutions for sustainable water management and urban climate resilience.
