From 3 to 8 May 2026, members of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), coordinator of the CARDIMED project, participated in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026, held in Vienna, Austria. The event brought together thousands of researchers from across the world to exchange the latest advances in Earth, environmental and climate sciences.
CARDIMED was represented through two scientific contributions highlighting the project’s innovative approaches to climate adaptation and Nature-based Solutions across the Mediterranean.
The first contribution was an oral presentation focused on the technological Nature-based Solutions implemented in DEMO9, showcasing how innovative systems are being developed and tested to strengthen water resilience and support climate adaptation in urban environments.
The second contribution was presented as an on-site poster and highlighted the work carried out in sub-DEMO1.1 on the island of Lesvos. The presentation summarised years of research on wastewater treatment and water reuse for agricultural irrigation, demonstrating how these solutions contribute to more sustainable water management in water-scarce Mediterranean regions.
Beyond the scientific programme, NTUA also participated in a NBS4EU cluster splinter session, where representatives from the cluster projects exchanged experiences on project implementation. The discussion focused on the progress achieved so far, key scientific findings and the common challenges and barriers encountered during the deployment of Nature-based Solutions across different territories.
Participation in EGU 2026 provided an important opportunity to disseminate CARDIMED’s research, strengthen collaboration with the wider scientific community and reinforce synergies within the NBS4EU cluster, contributing to the collective effort to accelerate climate resilience through innovative Nature-based Solutions.
