SVI.MED. presents CARDIMED during the “Our Water, Our Legacy: Current solutions for future generations” event to celebrate the Desertification and Drought Day 2024
17 June has been celebrated as Desertification and Drought Day 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the global effort to combat land degradation and drought.
This year’s event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the only global agreement on sustainable land management ratified by 196 countries and the European Union.
UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw said: “The future of our land is the future of our planet. By 2050, 10 billion people will depend on this vital resource. Yet we are losing the equivalent of four football fields to land degradation every second”.
Secretary of State Jochen Flasbarth said: ” Healthy soils form the basis of our future. No matter whether we are talking about climate change, biodiversity loss, or food crises – soil quality plays a central role for meeting these global challenges. Soils retain water and allow trees and plants to grow. We will only be able to feed humankind and deal with the climate crisis and its impacts if we have healthy soils.”On this occasion,
Barbara Sarnari of SVI.MED presented the CARDIMED project during the event “Our Water, Our Legacy: Current solutions for future generations“, one of the events organised by the Desertification Research Centre – University of Sassari (IT) from 17 to 20 June.
During her presentation ” The legacy of the NAWAMED project: how the CARDIMED and URWAN projects ensure sustainability and tackle new challenges”, she stressed the importance of ensuring continuity and consistency of project activities across projects. Sarnari also highlighted the successful experience of working in public-private cooperation, combining multidisciplinary approaches.
The occasion was useful to promote the CARDIMED project and to network with other international projects, mainly focused on the Mediterranean region and the African continent.
