Last 27th November 2024, as part of ICWS2024, the 18th International Conference on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control , in Martinique, we successfully hosted the CARDIMED workshop titled: “How to apply circular NBS for water in different biogeographical regions – A practical workshop on the case study of tropical Martinique.”
With around 25 experts in attendance, we explored how Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can be tailored to tropical climates, focusing on their replicability and co-benefits such as water reuse, flood control, and biodiversity enhancement.
The workshop began with an introduction to the CARDIMED NBS Catalogue by Cetaqua, followed by inspiring showcases of demo sites by IRIDRA and Uni Bologna. As a highlight, the conference organiser himself, Pascal Molle (INRAE, Lyon), shared insights from his impressive 15 years of experience implementing treatment wetlands and NBS in tropical islands across the region.
The session culminated in an interactive group exercise moderated by alchemia-nova, where participants tackled real-world challenges and developed practical strategies for replication and transferability of NBS in tropical contexts.
Following the workshop, participants joined the networking session with colleagues from the parallel WATERUN project workshop (focused on urban drainage). Over snacks and refreshing beverages, we exchanged ideas, built connections, and furthered the dialogue on sustainable water management solutions.
