BIOAZUL, our Spanish partner leader in innovative solutions for sustainable development, actively participated in the Euromediterranean SBN Meeting, organized by the Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation of IUCN, the Spanish Committee of IUCN, and the City Council of Málaga. The event, aimed at exploring and promoting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), took place on the 25th October 2023 in Málaga and gathered distinguished experts, researchers, and key stakeholders in the field.
Under the premise of showcasing experiences related to Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and discussing methodological approaches, BIOAZUL actively contributed to the outlined objectives. The event sought to foster scientific exchange, tools, and research models acquired in the implementation of NBS research projects. Moreover, it allowed participants to explore possibilities for scientific collaboration and engagement with local administrations, while also designing a proposal to organize and celebrate the 1st International Mediterranean Congress on NBS in Málaga in 2024.
The focus of the meeting was on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), addressing crucial societal challenges through the protection, sustainable management, and restoration of natural and modified ecosystems. BIOAZUL, committed to innovation and sustainability, engaged in discussions on how NBS can be effective and adaptive, benefiting both biodiversity and human well-being.
IUCN, a pioneer in the NBS concept, provided a robust framework for the development and implementation of these solutions over the last two decades. Supported by benefits derived from healthy ecosystems, NBS stand out as fundamental tools to address global challenges such as climate change, food and water security, disaster risk reduction, and human health.
During the meeting Antonia Lorenzo, CEO at BIOAZUL, presented the CARDIMED project and its main objective on climate resilience in the Mediterranean. She also highlighted that CARDIMED not only addresses current challenges but also aligns with the Horizon Europe mission of climate change adaptation. The pillars on which CARDIMED is based were other keypoints of its presentation. CARDIMED serves as a clear example of BIOAZUL’s commitment to creating concrete and effective solutions to tackle the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean region.
