Short Description:

Sicily is the largest and most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as an autonomous region of Italy. Located south of the Italian Peninsula, Sicily is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina and is home to 4.8 million inhabitants. Its capital city is Palermo. Sicily has a rich and diverse history, culture, and cuisine, influenced by various civilizations that have occupied the island over the centuries, such as the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Bourbons, and more. Sicily is also known for its natural beauty and landmarks. The Region of Sicily is working actively on the adaptation to climate change. The regional policies on decarbonization and energy are defined, and in addition to CARDIMED work on other European and international projects, such as ClimEmpower - User driven climate applications empowering regional resilience and RESILOC - Resilient Europe and Societies by Innovating Local Communities.

Role in CARDIMED:

The region of Sicily is involved in the implementation of DEMO4. Together with the Municipality of Catania they will overview the actions on the ground. Moreover, will ensure that all relevant stakeholders are engaged in the process and provide the outlook for upscaling activities. Finally, the redion of Sicily will ensure, that the CARDIMED activities will be in line with the Sicilian Operative Programme (FESR 14/20), the Energy and Environmental plan of Sicily Region and the Smart Specialisation Strategy S3.
