Short Description:

The Region of South Aegean is one of the thirteen regions of Greece. It consists of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese Island groups in the central and south-eastern Aegean Sea, with a total of 52 inhabited islands. The region was established in the 1987 administrative reform and since 2011 is divided into 13 regional units, formed around major islands: Andros, Kea-Kythnos, Syros, Thira (Santorini), Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Tinos, Paros, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos and Karpathos. The Region’s capital is situated in Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. South Aegean Region is responsible for these five key areas at regional level: Administration, Environment, Infrastructure and Planning, Transportation and Communications, Agricultural Economy and Veterinary, Public Health and Social Welfare.

Role in CARDIMED:

South Aegean Region will be one of the sites where DEMO1 Non-conventional water loops on North-South Aegean islands, Greece (NTUA) interventions will be implemented. Specifically on Mykonos, through a set of rainwater harvesting Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), aquifer recharge is achieved during the wet season, and consequently water is recovered during the dry season. The harvested water is valorized for domestic use and for agricultural irrigation. On Sifnos a network of at least 180 traditional stone weirs will be constructed in the stream of Kamares, to provide water for the agricultural land, enrich the aquifer, improve the conditions for biodiversity in the area, and reduce the flood risk at the touristic area.
