Short Description:

Alghero is a city with a population of around 43,000 inhabitants, located in the North-West coast of Sardinia, Italy. As part of its institutional work, the municipality of Alghero, participtes in European projects related to climate change adaptation, with particular reference to urban floods due to rainwaters and exposure to water hazard. Most recently the following two Interreg Maritime Italy-France programmes, as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF): (i) ADAPT, a programme about urban systems adaptation to climate change of the cross-border space, and (ii) RETRALAGS, which led to the establishment of the Laguna of Calich Agreement.

Role in CARDIMED:

In CARDIMED the municipality of Alghero is the project leader of the Laguna of Calich Agreement, established in the North-West Sardinia, with approximately forty signatories. The area around Laguna of Calich with its key stakeholders will act as DEMO3 Decarbonization of agricultural practices and combating agricultural pollution in Sardinia, Italy (UNIVPM). In the Laguna of Calich it will be possible thanks to the use of NBS strategies and renewable energy systems that allow an efficient reuse of water for irrigation.
