Short Description:

Marine Conservation Greece (MCG) is an innovative Greek SME specializing in water resources management, marine environment investigation, and anti-pollution technology, serving as a strategic partner and Demosite Leader for flagship European research projects. By bridging the gap between laboratory research and real-world application, MCG provides fully permitted testing infrastructure and expert field management for Horizon Europe and LIFE consortia, offering the physical and administrative ground necessary to test climate-resilience technologies while bypassing time-consuming permitting delays. Beyond its role in transforming theoretical frameworks into operational realities within top-tier EU programs, the company delivers high-level technical consulting for Local Authorities, Water Supply Companies, and the private sector. Its diverse expertise ranges from the design and troubleshooting of water and wastewater treatment facilities—addressing complex issues such as toxic substances, odor, and taste—to coastal engineering, marine ecology, and advanced automated shoreline monitoring. Utilizing high-resolution coastal video imagery for morphodynamic tracking and 2-D wave run-up detection, MCG implements cutting-edge solutions to mitigate beach erosion and protect the coastal environment.

Role in CARDIMED:

Within the framework of the European CARDIMED (Horizon Europe) project, Marine Conservation Greece (MCG) serves as a strategic partner dedicated to the implementation and optimization of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in arid island environments. Combining its technical expertise with the needs of local communities, MCG focuses on the operational management, monitoring, and continuous optimization of two flagship demonstration sites: SubDemo 1.2a: Smart Rainwater Harvesting & Precision Agriculture: MCG oversees an innovative, energy-autonomous system that collects rainwater through sub-surface collectors and stores it in tanks designed to blend seamlessly with the Cycladic landscape. This system supports circular economy principles by providing advanced precision irrigation for off-grid agricultural areas. SubDemo 1.2b: Circular Water Management & Aquifer Enrichment: The company manages infrastructure that transforms winter flooding into a strategic summer water reserve by utilizing the subsurface as a natural reservoir. By combining rooftop rainwater harvesting with bioswales for filtration and storage, MCG ensures the closing of the local water cycle. MCG is responsible for ensuring the operational readiness and societal integration of these systems. By optimizing NBS technologies, MCG secures sustainable access to water for both irrigation and domestic use, significantly enhancing the climate resilience of communities facing severe water scarcity.
