Imperial College London (ICL) is a science-based university with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research and is the only UK University to focus entirely on science, engineering, medicine and business. ICL fosters multidisciplinary collaboration and is home to 17,000 students and 8,000 staff, operating in a vibrant culture of research excellence. ICL possesses a range of modern, state-of-the-art facilities for implementing research and innovative technologies and approaches that have demonstrable impacts, while taking into consideration sustainability, circularity and environmental aspects. Our group, the Resilience and Sustainability group at ICL is at the forefront of developing assessment frameworks and methodologies for various sectors, assessing technological implementation and integration, aiming to support public and market acceptance of the various technologies, and thus support the transition from linear economy to a circular and sustainable economy. The framework involves environmental, social, economic and circularity aspects, supported by a prospective Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach to forecast long-term environmental implications and benefits of emerging technologies before their widespread adoption. Our portfolio reflects pioneering work on evaluating the digitalisation and smartification of technologies, and the development of the Multi-Sectoral Water Circularity Assessment (MSWCA) framework, which integrates various socio-economic sectors, emphasising a Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus. Our group has already implemented and adapted the ISO59020 (circularity assessment) framework to the water/wastewater sector.
