Short Description:

Founded in 1088, the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna (UNIBO) is the oldest university in the western world and one of the most important institutions of higher education across Europe. It will act in the CARDIMED project through Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences (DISTAL). DISTAL is a leading institution with a strong commitment on research and knowledge transfer. The research activity encompasses different fields of study, among the most relevant Biological Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Vegetable Production, Food and Environmental Microbiology, Animal production, Food Science and Technology. DISTAL boasts high rates of approved projects through competitive calls, which represent one of the most important sources of funding. In particular, the Agricultural hydraulics and watershed protection scientific group will work on the project objectives.

Role in CARDIMED:

For CARDIMED, UNIBO is involved in DEMO 3 Decarbonization of agricultural practices and combating agricultural pollution in Sardinia, Italy (UNIVPM). Nature Based Solutions (NBS) will be used to reduce carbon emissions in agricultural practices and livestock farming while also addressing agricultural runoff contamination. This will be complemented by the integration of renewable energy systems to ensure efficient distribution of reclaimed and irrigation water in the Alghero community and the Calich lagoon catchment area. UNIBO will focus on the study of NBS for the removal of different contaminants that are typical of agricultural runoff water to improve surface water quality and reduce the negative impact of non-point sources of pollution. Furthermore, based on data availability and quality, GIS-based catchment-wide impacts will be considered by UNIBO in Sardinia region.
